Essential Aftercare Tips for Wisdom Tooth Removal
After your wisdom teeth are removed, proper care is key to healing well and avoiding complications. At Oral Surgery Specialists of Oklahoma, we make sure every patient leaves with clear, simple instructions for wisdom tooth aftercare.
The first 24 hours are the most important. Keep the gauze pad over the area for a few hours to reduce bleeding. Replace it as needed. Avoid spitting, using straws, or rinsing your mouth too forcefully. These actions could loosen the blood clot and cause dry socket. For more details, check our tooth extractions page.
Apply an ice pack on your cheek in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling. Take any prescribed medications exactly as instructed. If your surgeon gives you antibiotics, complete the full dose.
On day two and beyond, you can gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day. Stick to soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes. Avoid crunchy or spicy foods until healing is complete.
Keeping your mouth clean is essential, but be careful brushing near the surgical site. Use a soft toothbrush and avoid disturbing the area.
Every patient heals at a different pace, but most people feel better within a few days. Swelling may last a bit longer. If you experience severe pain, fever, or excessive bleeding, contact us right away.
With the right wisdom tooth aftercare, you’ll be back to normal before you know it. We’re here to help you every step of the way.
